The capsizing of luxury cruise liner, Costa Concordia, has dealt a double blow to the Italian island of Giglio. Already reeling from the eurozone crisis, the island now faces a potential environmental disaster which the island’s tourist-dependent economy would find hard to survive. There are nearly 2400 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 200 tonnes of diesel aboard the Costa Concordia and salvage workers are preparing to pump fuel out of the ship. Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan reports from Giglio Island, Italy.

www.romaniaindex.ro Eight people are dead after the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground off the Italian coast in an accident which forced the coast guard to evacuate over 4000 people, AFP reports. More than 30 people were also injured in the accident, several seriously, and several people were still missing after jumping overboard in panic as the ship began to tilt, the Messaggero newspaper said. One of the victims was a man in his 70s who died of a heart attack caused by the shock to his system when he jumped into the icy waters, reports said. Most of the 3200 passengers and 1000 crew members were quickly evacuated, but around 200 people remained stranded on board. According to the London Telegraph, the passengers’ dinner was interrupted by a loud boom around 8 pm local time. An initial announcement claimed the ship was suffering an electrical failure, and ordered everyone onboard to don life-jackets. “It was just like something out of the Titanic,” one woman said. “You could tell straight away that the ship had hit something and no way was it an electrical fault.’ A local mayor on Giglio, a popular vacation island about 18 miles off the Tuscan coast, said he was trying to find rooms to house the stranded passengers and crew overnight. The cruise ship had departed from the Civitavecchia port near Rome earlier on Friday with scheduled calls at Palermo, Cagliari, Palma, Barcelona and Marseille. The Italian news agency ANSA said the Concordia started to take on water

Some on the island said eight were dead. At least three bodies were recovered from the sea, the Italian coast guard reported. Helicopters were working to pluck to safety some 50 people still trapped aboard the badly listing Costa Concordia on Saturday, said Coast Guard Cmdr. Francesco Paolillo. Some people were thrown into the sea when the Costa Concordia started listing, others jumped to evacuate the ship, officials said. The ship, which reportedly cost more than 0 million, was three-quarters under water and sinking fast, a Giglio hotel clerk told NBC News on Saturday. The Telegraph of London said some passengers jumped from the steeply listing ship and swam a short distance to the island. A photo showed the brightly lit ship teetering just outside a harbor wall. One official said that among the dead was a man around age 65, who might have been ill or who might not have withstood the cold of the sea at night, Il Messagero said. The 950-foot Costa Concordia had left the port of Savona at 7 pm local time and was sailing to Civitavecchia, its first port of call, when it ran aground around 9 pm A rocky reef Costa Cruises said 3200 passengers were aboard, along with 1023 crew members. Rome (CNN) — The 3200 passengers on board the Costa Concordia cruise liner were expecting a night of entertainment and relaxation off Italy’s Mediterranean coast. Instead, at about dinner time, the lights suddenly went out, the ship tilted to one side and an ominous scraping sound was heard. The 1500-cabin luxury vessel, also carrying about 1000 crew, had run aground on a sand bar off the tiny island of Giglio.

The World Health Organisation Rates Spain’s Costa Blanca as One of the Healthiest Areas of the World

(PRWEB) April 8, 2006

The World Health Organisation has confirmed what many people had believed for years, namely that the Costa Blanca is one of the healthiest areas of the world in which to live. This isn’t surprising to those people who know the region. The Costa Blanca has an excellent year-round climate. The humidity is relatively low, and therefore ideal for sufferers of arthritis and other climatically influenced health problems.

The landscape of the Northern Costa Blanca, contrasts significantly with the area to the South of Alicante, with high peaks and breathtaking mountain views. The deep valley’s lined with almond trees, rich soil, green vegetation, orange and lemon groves, olive trees and vineyards. The Jalon valley is a truly beautiful sight particularly in January and February when the almond blossom is in bloom.

Water sports of every kind can be found in most resorts in the Costa Blanca. There are modern marina’s making it a perfect base for yachtsmen and it’s only fifty miles or so due East to the magical cruising area of the Balearic Islands.

Of course for some people the Costa Blanca beaches are a big attractions, the majority of which are kept wonderfully clean. Whilst for others it’s the beautiful golf courses such as Villamartin, manicured to perfection and situated amongst orange groves and palm trees.

Torrevieja, situated next to the sea in the south of the Costa Blanca region is surrounded by two beautiful and large natural saltwater lagoons which form the well-known “Salterns of Torrevieja” considered the biggest in Europe and second in the world.

A new website http://www.villamartingolf.org.uk has been developed which provides further information about the area. This includes details of flights into Alicante and Murcia, various car hire companies that operate from the two airports, information on the many championship golf courses, beautiful beaches, numerous things to do and places to visit.
